Working as an Illustrator
While graphic designers generally work for a design company, an illustrator is usually going to be working freelance. Because of this, you will need to learn about your skills and faults and learn the ropes of business.
The Single Cycle of Work
While graphic designers generally work for a design company, an illustrator is usually going to be working freelance. Because of this, you will need to learn about your skills and faults and learn the ropes of business.
The Single Cycle of Work
- Prospecting Work

- Receiving an offer of commission
- Reading the offer of commission carefully before quoting the client
- Negotiating the counter-demands where necessary
- Generating the roughs
- Delivering the roughs by the deadline
- Generating the final artwork
- Delivering the final artwork
- Submitting your final invoice to the client
- Tracking the payment
- Receiving the final payment
You can manage your freelance work by coming up with a business plan using key elements such as an executive summary, a description of the business opportunity, your marketing and sales strategies, your management team and personnel, your operations, and your financial forecasts. Also look into your rights when it comes to copyrights, licenses, moral rights, and including a key provisos.
It is important to have a website and a physical portfolio when promoting yourself. There are many places you can promote your work and it depends on both you and your work which venue will be best.
Financial forecasts are important to make to make sure you are getting what you deserve.

Kelsy Beckett
Kelsey is a freelance illustrator from Michigan. She works mostly in acrylics and oils. She makes work that looks digital but is done by a traditional medium. I love the girls she creates and the floating, whimsical world she creates as well as her color palettes.
