Art movements like Futurism, Surrealism, and Pop Art have changed the way the public perceives art. Although many of the artists never sought to create a movement, it was the collection of these artists participating in social upheaval, new technology, and traveling to other cultures that created new schools of art. Movements grow from artists' desire to understand their environment and their thirst for a creative way to express that. It is important for an illustrator's success to have an adventurous attitude for their work.

The principles of design are interconnected and can be selectively combined or used all together. It is the principles that an artist chooses that shapes their style.

Observational drawing pushes you to choose quickly what is important to include and what is okay to leave out. Imaginative drawing requires thorough research and a brain full of ideas.
